Four Common Items That Can Help Secure Your Skip or Rolley Bin Against Animals

by Monica Rogers

Tired of animals knocking over your rolley bins or stealing the rubbish from your business's skip? This can be frustrating, but luckily, you can easily find ways to lock your bins and skips so that they are animal proof. Here are four basic things that can help:

1. Hasp Lock

If the company that supplies your rubbish bin doesn't mind, you can easily add a hasp lock to most rolley bins as well as to skips. Simply, attach the ring of the hasp lock to the bin and the flap of the hasp lock to the lid. Then, when you close the lid, lock the hasp lock with a padlock. If you aren't concerned about theft and just want to keep out animals, you don't even have to use a padlock. Rather, you can use a bit of rope to tie together the two sides of the hasp lock.

2. Ratcheting Tow Straps

Towing straps can also be a useful way to keep animals out of rubbish bins. Whether you use a rolley bin or a skip, simply wrap the tow straps around it. If possible, also wind the towing straps through a fence rail or anything else that you can stabilise the bin against. Then, using the ratcheting feature on the tow straps, tighten everything up.

3. Pallets

With some old pallets or some scrap timber, you can create a frame for your rolley bins. A frame makes it impossible for animals to knock over your bin, and when you combine a frame with one of the lid locking options above, you really protect your bin from creatures of the night.

To make a frame out of old pallets, turn them upright and nail them together in a square or rectangular shape that is just large enough to fit your bins. Then, add some hinges to one of the pallets so you can use that one like a door to roll your bin in and out of the frame.

4. Bungee Cord

A bungee cord works wonders at locking a rolley bin or a basic circular rubbish bin. For it to work, you just need a lip along the edge of the rubbish bin. Hook one end of the bungee cord into the lip, and pull the rest of the bungee cord over the rubbish bin's lid until the hook reaches the lip or handle on the other side. Add a second bungee cord for more security.
