Commercial Food Waste: How to Prevent Bad Smells in Your Skip Bin

by Monica Rogers

If you own a restaurant or fast food shop, you probably generate a large quantity of food waste which will end up in your skip bin. This food waste can create bad odours and can attract urban foxes and other pests such as insects. However, there are some steps you can take to combat the impact of food waste on your skip bin.

Cut down on food waste

It is estimated that Australians waste 4 million tonnes of food every year. You can help to cut down on this waste by serving slightly smaller portions, which will encourage your customers to clear their plates. Any remaining food waste can be added to a composter. As bacteria in the soil break down the food waste, it will create high-quality compost.

Invest in garbage disposal unit

A garbage disposal unit is designed to chop food waste into fine pieces. If you choose to invest in a garbage disposal unit, you should be able to hook it up to collection container which can be quickly sealed. This seal will enable you to dispose of food waste without having to place it directly into the skip bin, which will reduce unpleasant odours.

Keep your skip bin clean

Often, the foul smell coming from a skip bin isn't caused by recently disposed of food waste, but by rotting food waste which has been stuck to the inside of the bin for some time. You should periodically clean you skip bin using a hosepipe, liquid bleach and a long handled broom. Add a little water to the bottom of the skip bin using the hosepipe and then add liquid bleach. Use the long handled broom to scrub the bottom and the side of the skip bin. Doing so will help to remove and neutralise any food waste which is stuck to the inside of the bin.

Invest in a sealed skip bin

If you have an open skip bin, it is easy for bad smells to escape. Investing in a sealed skip bin could help to prevent odours from escaping into the local environment. Sealed skip bins feature a rubber seal which runs around the opening in the side of the skip bin. When the lid of the skip bin is closed, it forms a tight seal with the rubber.
